How has corruption within the Government of the Philippines continued despite the presidents efforts and what effect has this had on the people?
My entire life I've been immersed in Filipino culture as much as a child raised in America could be. I experienced everything from a traditional baptism to passing out halo-halo to the elders at my grandparent's parties. When talking about the state of the Philippines with family members or family friends it was customary to completely skip over the fact that the Philippines was one of the most notoriously corrupt places on earth, but that didn't mean that I was completely oblivious to the issues.
So, when it was announced that the research project couldn't be done on an American issue it was simple for me to choose the country I'd write about. Then it became even simpler to focus my topic on one aspect of the Philippines. The aspect that nobody ever really wanted to discuss, corruption within the government.
There was really no evolution of my hypothesis or thesis throughout the entire course of this project. Prior to even beginning research, I was already aware of the primary issues within the Philippines and it was easy to come up with a hypothesis that didn't require any changing despite my further research into the topic.
The research process itself was possibly the most difficult part of this entire project. In American news, the Philippines was only ever mentioned when it came to issues that directly affected America or Duterte and Trump's meeting with each other. I had to read through articles written by those based in the Philippines which meant most of the stuff I read was heavily impacted by bias whether that be active support of Duterte or going completely against everything Duterte stands for. It was hard to sift through what was simply someone trying to push their viewpoint and actual facts. Yet when that process was done it became easy for the rest of the pieces to fall into places.
Since writing the paper there have been no relevant developments regarding corruption in the Philippines. Though I discussed how Duterte promised to let go of his position in office if anything was proven to him he is still President and is still encouraging police involvement within the Philippines.
